All teacher have university degrees!

All of the teachers at our ASLS hold university and/or Master’s degrees and they have successfully completed a rigorous training course that prepares them to teach Spanish to foreigners.

As part of ongoing teacher development, the teachers participate in one-on-one training sessions as well as monthly development seminars.

Teachers must complete a series of ten three hour seminars in order to receive their professional development certificate from the school.

Using a variety of creative teaching techniques and resources, instructors adapt the classroom activities to cater to all learning styles, facilitating a stimulating and motivating environment.

Think Abroad!

The main goal of the courses is to develop our students' communicative skills. Our many years of experience in language teaching have proven to us that the best way to accomplish this is to conduct our classes in Spanish and to provide students with plenty of opportunities to practice using the language. We don't just want you to know Spanish, we want you to be able to use it!

In class, the emphasis is on development of speaking and listening skills, but this does not mean that other key areas are not dealt with: students also work on reading and writing skills, grammar and vocabulary.

Additional Information about the school

Mexican Cooking Class:
Timetable: Cooking classes start every 2 weeks, on the day following the start dates of the intensive courses (for beginners). Classes take place three afternoons per week (usually Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday) from 17.00 to 19.00. Students can take 1, 2, 3 or 4 weeks of classes.  The first class includes a visit to a typical grocery store and a market in Playa so that students can learn the names of all basic ingredients.

The cooking classes themselves start by demonstrating some of the basics of Mexican cooking - guacamole, fajitas, pico de gallo (tex-mex sauce), quesadillas, molletes, tacos, enchiladas, enfrijoladas, sopes and pambazos - and then we move on to more specialized dishes such as mole, pozole, pipian, tamales and adobo. You also may make delicious flan de cajeta and other typical Mexican desserts. All the ingredients are included in the course fee and students can also consume everything that's been produced once the class is over. The course fees include level test, cookery course materials, certificates, programme of social activities, student card and access to all the school facilities... plus ingredients, use of utensils and washing up!

Spanish + Diving:
The Diving for Beginners course is a 3-day course leading to the PADI Open Water certificate for dives of up to 18 meters. Playa del Carmen has several diving schools but we have chosen to work with one of the most experienced, Phantom Divers, which was first established in 1983.  Phantom Divers' instructors are all fully qualified PADI tutors (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and their equipment meets the rigorous safety standards imposed on the industry. They also speak several languages, so if their instructions in Spanish aren't clear, these can readily be translated.

The course includes theoretical sessions, loan of a diving manual, pool sessions, 4 ocean boat dives, exams, equipment and certification. Students will need 2 passport size photos.

The school highly recommends the purchase of the diving manual (cost 40 US$). However if you prefer you can borrow the manual upon payment of a refundable deposit.

As a first step students are required to read 3 chapters of the PADI open water manual. They need to do this before day 1 of the course.

* Day 1 of the course goes over the theory, introduces students to the equipment and includes initial training in a swimming pool (6 to 8 hours). This first training session will normally take place on a Saturday or Sunday, so as not to clash with the Spanish classes held in the mornings.

* Day 2 students practice the skills learned at the pool in shallow ocean reefs
(3 hours in the afternoon).

* Day 3 students dive up to 60ft in open water, practice more skills and take the final dive test (4 hours in the afternoon).

Intensive Spanish + Latin Dancing Course:

Learn the basic steps with the school's expert dance tutors. There's plenty of opportunity to practice in Playa's clubs and discos.

Dance classes take place 3 afternoons per week and students can enroll for 1 - 4 weeks.
