Flamingo Beach is located in the Guanacaste Providence of Costa Rica, which is Northwest and on the Pacific Ocean side of the country. Flamingo beach is 45 minute drive from Liberia, 4 hours drive from San Jose, 4 1/2 hours from Manuel Antonio, 3 hours from Monteverde, or 3 hours from the La Fortuna, the Arenal Volcano Region.

Guanacaste is derived from the word quahnacaztian, which is a native word for the Guanacaste tree - the national tree of Costa Rica. You can find luxurious hotels, condominiums, restaurants, and artisan shops in Flamingo Beach. Flamingo Beach was formally known as Playa Blanca because of its white sandy beaches. The climate in and around Flamingo Beach is usually hot and dry; however, there is a constant breeze that works well to keep one relatively comfortable throughout the day. Nights are always cooler. The school does have over 9 air-conditioned classrooms for those that require this amenity. The average temperature, year-round is 90 F (32 Celsius). So bring your sun-screen, Spanish dictionary, and an open-mind and get ready to learn Spanish through living it!

Flamingo beach has both a dry and a wet season as well as high and low student seasons. The dry season is December through April. The wet season is May through November.

The high season (when the school has the most students) is usually June through August and December through January. The low student season is comprised of all of the other months. The school is located in front of the ocean and is surrounded by beautiful vegetation and flowers. Pura Vida! Every day, the school opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m. Students can use the facility and school resources during theses hours of operation. Also, the school has a swimming pool for those who want to cool off and play during break, after or before classes.

The school has over 30 classrooms, a library, cafeteria, WiFi throughout, a basketball court, and much more. During the 10:00-10:20 a.m. break, students can drink coffee, water, tea, etc. and eat snacks like pancakes or toast while they mingle with fellow classmates. This time is for creating life-long friendship, practicing Spanish, and recharging one's batteries while preparing for round two of Spanish classes. Also, students can buy lunch at 12:00 p.m. for between $5-$6 in the cafeteria. The school chef makes fresh, delicious dishes everyday.

On the first day of class, the student is given a written and oral exam to determine his/her skill level. The student is always placed in a class according to his/her Spanish ability. The school chooses not to mix ability levels in order to fill groups, but places students in their appropriate group level depending only on skill level. This is not a business decision, but an educational one in which the student's needs are paramount.

Also, on the first day of class, students will participate in an orientation to discuss the following: local points of interest, the school services (tourism advice, post office, private inter-campus transfers, cultural activities, tours, etc.), safety precautions, tips concerning the homestay setting and cultural acclimation processes.

Students who wish to bring their laptops along can utilize the school’s vast Internet connections, computer labs, and resources. Students are allowed to use the school’s computers with Internet access for a maximum of 30 minutes. This allows other students the opportunity to use it as well, but if no one is waiting to use the computers, you can stay on as long as you would like. International phone calls also can be made for free through Skype.

Additionally, the school has WiFi throughout, which can be accessed anywhere on the school grounds. In addition to WiFi access, there is a computer lab with three computers that are all equipped with high-speed Internet and additional word processing applications. Students can rent cell phones or buy international phone cards at the school to make calls home. Local phone calls can also be made at the school for free.

Our AFLS in Flamingo Beach provides students with the option of enrolling in various cultural programs and activities. Through participating in these cultural activities, you will have the opportunity to utilize the Spanish acquired in the classroom and to become accustomed to the realities of Costa Rican life and culture.The school offers free classes (cooking, dance, & beach trip) weekly, cultural activities, as well a fee-based day and weekend excursion program. The staff are able to get excellent discounts on these excursions due to the high volume of students that they enroll.

There has to be a minimum number of student enrollments for all fee-based excursions to take place and students can sign-up for these activities at school on the bulletin board in the cafeteria. The Activities Coordinator, Gustavo, will assist you in finding activities that fit your budget and needs.

Course Summary

Study & Learn Spanish in Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

The School offers small group classes and privates classes to all students. The group classes will never have more than 4 students per class to ensure personal attention and increased talk-time. The average size of the group classes at Flamingo Beach is 2 students, which is basically a semi-private class for the price of a group course. Students get an amazing bang for their buck at this Spanish school!

If students enroll for a group class and there is no other student at your level, you will still pay for group classes, but will receive private classes. The classroom environment is casual but focused, and the teachers work to ensure that students are being challenged in a fun and engaging way. Sometimes, classes are taken outside of the formal classroom setting, for example, at the pool side, at the market, at a cafe, or at other places around the school’s campus.

On the first day of classes the student must arrive at the school by 7:00 AM to take both a written and oral exam to determine their Spanish language skill. The school does not mix language levels so you are sure to be with other students at, more or less, your language level. However, if you feel that you are in a group that is not advanced or challenging enough, please let the Academic Coordinator or Think Abroad know and we will work to ensure that your level is changed.

Intensive Group 20 - Spanish classes in a group setting with no more than a total of 4 students. 20 hours per week from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Super Intensive Group 27.5 - Spanish classes in the group setting with no more than a total of 4 students for 5.5 hours per day for a total of 27.5 hours per week. Classes start at 8:00 a.m. and end at 2:30 p.m. with a lunch break from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. In the afternoon, classes last for 1.5 hours and are from 1:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m.
- 8:00 a.m. Start of class
- 10:00 - 10:20 a.m. Mid-morning break
- 12:00 - 1:00 p.m. Break
- 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. End of class

Combination 30 (Group/Private) - Spanish group classes for 4 hours in the morning from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. with a 55 minute lunch break. From 1:00 - 3:00 the student takes private classes to address personal language needs.

Private Classes - On your terms, one-on-one training to address your specific Spanish language needs. You can take 2-8 hours of private Spanish classes at our Partner school in Flamingo Beach Costa Rica.

The school’s methodology concentrates on developing the students’ linguistic ability, specifically oral fluency. With that said, students can expect to be challenged to speak and the teachers are trained to get the most out of each student. Additionally, the school offers specific programs for health professionals, lawyers, business-people and any other profession for which a student might like to acquire vocabulary relevant to their focal area.

Students can also take group courses in the morning and private classes in the afternoon (Group/Private Combo 30). The school reports that, “During the high season (June & July) we reserve the right to schedule the four hour program in either the morning or the afternoon (1:00 - 5:00 PM with a 20-minute break from 3:00 - 3:20 PM). Students are always informed about their schedule at least one week before classes start.”

Morning Group Class Schedule for Intensive Group:
- 8:00 a.m. start of class - general conversation, review homework and grammar
- 10:00 - 10:20 a.m. - Break “El Rancho” - Time to socialize, eat, drink and relax (coffee and snacks are included for free during this break)

Private classes are offered to all students, however, those who will be abroad for a short period of time should take private classes. Privates are advantageous because the student is able to focus on areas of professional and/or personal interests without the competition of other students.

Specialty Courses


Study & Learn Spanish in Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

Medical Spanish for Professionals

This course is offered on a monthly basis (see schedule below) and is a four-hour group course that can be taken as a one, two, or three week course. Each week consists of 4 hours of Medical Spanish class daily - 8:00 am to  12:00 pm - from Monday to Fridays. Students can take this course at our Flamingo Beach location as the schools are under the same management and ownership.

Each week is spent at a different campus, so the participants have the opportunity to experience  three distinct regions of Costa Rica. If you decide to stay at our Partner school in Flamingo Beach and not travel to the other school campuses, you can; however your Medical Spanish class is become private classes and you will have to pay $50 more per week.

The first week, students study at our Partner school in Flamingo and the second week is spent at our Partner school in Monteverde. The third week, students travel to the schools campus in Heredia, where in addition to continuing classes, you can have the opportunity to volunteer at a local clinic and observe firsthand Costa Rican medical methods and techniques.

For the volunteer option students observe 4 days a week, Tuesday through Friday, from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, at a medical clinic in a low income community in Costa Rica. The volunteer fee of $120 includes the cost of transportation as well as a donation to the low-income clinic. NOTE: Minimum level of “high beginner” is required for the medical volunteer program.

The school has created a specialized Medical Spanish textbook that is included in the price of the course. Additionally, this program does include Medical Volunteer opportunities in local Costa Rican clinics.

Again, grammar and conversation remain the focus of class; however, greater emphasis and increased class time is dedicated to relevant medical vocabulary, practice in patient/clincian dialogues, and conversation topics that include important multicultural elements. All grammar topics are taught in the context of medical terminology and expressions. The goal of this course is for students to have the necessary language skills in order to provide quality health care to Spanish speakers.

Spanish for Kids

The kids program is offered year-round and can accommodate kids under 12 years-old. This course focuses on basic communication skills, vocabulary, and introduction to Spanish grammar concepts. While the kids study Spanish, so can the parents! Obviously, they are in separate classes, but studying at the same time and in a fun and functional way. This program provides the perfect combination of Spanish education and family vacation.

Also, kids between 4-6 years old have the opportunity to take Spanish classes that are sure to keep them excited and entertained, while teaching them elemental vocabulary and interesting age-specific topics in Spanish.

Spanish for Teens

This speciality Spanish program, Spanish for Teens, is for those who are between 13 - 17 years old and will be traveling with or without a parent/guardian. We encourage the parent/guardian to participate and take Spanish classes while their child or children are taking classes. This is a wonderful opportunity to encorporate learning and self improvement into a family vaction.

All classes will focus on oral, auditory, reading and written comprehension. The textbooks are written in Spanish and have been created by the schools acedemic staff. The primary aim of this course is for the student to acheive oral competence and functional fluency. The teenage participants are closely supervised by our Partner school staff and also by the host families. A school representative will be in direct contact, weekly with the students parent/guardian to report on the child's general wellbeing and share specific details about the teenagers progression in class and how he/she is adapting to the new environment.

Each parent/guardian will have to complete the following paperwork and each teenager must follow the schools rules to participate in the Spanish for Teens program.

1. A each teeenage student and parent/guardian must sign a contract accepting the rules of behavior for a minor student traveling without an adult.

2. A each teeenage student must be covered by an international health/travel insurance plan

3. Each teenage student must agree to stay with one of the schools homestay families who are trained and selected to support and nurture the teenage students. The homestay families will serve and act as the students family while abroad.

The teenage student can take group Spanish classes for either 4 or 5.5 hours per day. The teachers are usually rotated after one week of classes; however, if a student really likes a specific teacher, the school can arrange to continue the teacher student group for longer.

During the high season, June, July and August, it is possible to share the group Spanish class with other teenage students. However, during the other months, the teenage student will most likely share Spanish classes with students of all ages. At the end of the course, the school will issue the student a certificate that indicates the amount of hours of Spanish studied and the level that was attained. This certificate may be presented to a high school or could be useful for a University application.

The teenage students are encouraged to participate in the free and paid cultural activities and excursions organized by the school. This is a excellent way to explore the country, people, and culture as well as to practice and improve your Spanish language skills. These activiites are shared with students of all ages and backgrounds who are also taking Spanish classes at the school.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The school offers volunteer opportunities for those students who are interested in helping others. There is a nominal charge of $60 for this opportunity.

These are some active volunteer opportunities in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

1. Teach English at the school in their English department - work with kids, assist an English teacher or substitute English teacher, use your creativity to inspire and teach English abroad.

2. Assist the teachers at the Patreo and Brasilito Elementary Public School. Teach English and assist with administrative duties.

3. Volunteer at Culture, Education and Psychology for Infants and Adolescents (CEPIA). This is a Costa Rican non-profit organization that seeks to promote culture, health, sports, and education for children and teenagers from low-income families in the coastal communities of Guanacaste, Costa Rica.

Study & Learn Spanish in Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica

The school has 12 full-time teachers and around 10 part-time teachers that are utilized for the high season. All of them are native Spanish-speakers and quite experienced in teaching Spanish to foreigners. The teachers must pass a four week training course facilitated by the academic coordinator of the school. Before teaching, they are evaluated based on a series of exams and presentations prior to being selected as a Spanish teacher. Some are university graduates and some are working to earn Bachelor’s Degrees.

Once on staff, the teacher begins by observing experienced teachers in preparation to teach beginner students. With experience, the teachers receive additional training in order to work with the more advanced students. Using a variety of creative teaching techniques and resources, all of the instructors have an ingenious capability to adapt and cater to all learning styles, thereby creating a stimulating and inclusive environment for all students to participate and learn new material.

At the conclusion of the course, students are asked to fill out an end-of-program satisfaction survey in which they will be asked to evaluate their instructor’s teaching abilities and their overall experience at the school.

The teachers at the school are not only highly qualified Spanish instructors, but they are also fun-loving, enthusiastic individuals who are passionate about Spanish language education and have an inherent interest in their students’ success and enjoyment in and out of the classroom. The teachers rotate to a new classroom after the end of one week. After completion of a week, students who wish to stay with their teacher longer than one week have this option, however, they need to let the academic coordinator know by Wednesday of the previous week and they will do their best to make it happen.

There are many different housing options provided for all Think Abroad students. We work hard to ensure that each student’s housing requirements, specifications, and accommodation needs are sufficiently met. Our AFLS in Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica offers 5 types of housing options.


The school has over 35 homestay family partnerships for students who desire an authentic Costa Rican experience while living in Flamingo Beach. We at Think Abroad, highly recommend this housing option. The homestay is when a student is housed with a native Costa Rican family. The family will provide traditional meals (2 per day), facilities, and linens for their guests and, with advance notice, they can meet special dietary needs, including those of vegetarians and vegans.

All of the host families are carefully screened and evaluated by both the school and the students. These families are accustomed to hosting foreign students and all are located in the surrounding Flamingo Beach towns, which can be considered small and rustic. The homes are humble, clean, safe, and basic and the families are exceptionally friendly and happy to be hosting international students. If you decide not to walk to school, the school’s transportation service will take you to and from your homestay everyday.

General Information: Student Residence and Apartment complex - These settings are located in the town of Flamingo Beach, Costa Rica and are about ten minutes by car to the school and 20 minutes walking. The school offers free transportation to and from these locations each weekday.

This option is for students who come alone, with a partner or with a friend. There are 2 single beds in the room and you will share the kitchen and dining room with the fellow students housed at the residence.

If you choose this option by yourself, the school will place you with a roommate of the same gender. No meals are provided, but the apartment is equipped with a microwave, stove, cutlery, and a refrigerator. The price is $200 per week.

This includes a private room with a private bathroom. Guests share the kitchen and dining room. No meals are provided, but the residence is equipped with a microwave, stove, cutlery, and a refrigerator. The price is $275 per week.

No meals are provided, but the apartment is equipped with a microwave, stove, cutlery, and a refrigerator. The price is $400 per week either for one person, or for 2 people.

Additional Information about the school

- $36 Costa Rica airport tax that must be paid at the airport before you depart.

- Students starting classes in Flamingo are recommended taking the arrival package ( cost $90.00 per student and includes one night at a B&B in a single room and transportation to Flamingo or Monteverde).

- Any student can participate in the volunteer programs if you are over 18 years old. Some programs do require a certain level of Spanish language skill.

Prior to departure, students must pay a $99 enrollment fee and deposit to reserve a seat. All homestay accommodations (to live with a native family) start on Sundays and end on Saturdays. The airport pickup service is optional, but highly recommended. Price points are quoted in US Dollars.
